Our triplets are now 19 months old and life has accelerated tremendously. The kids are changing daily and days are whizzing past. I want it to slow down for my own enjoyment. People now ask if it is getting easier now that the kids interact, are more vocal, and are more "independent". It is a difficult question. While when they are young and totally dependent on you, it very predictable. So, though it is a lot of hours, the schedule makes it easier to plan. On the other hand the kids are now able to do more on their own which means they can get into much more trouble, but the rewards are also greater.
Some of the dangers involve the love to climb. Initially there was a fascination with the stairs. (Though over the last month it seems Darcy has decided she would rather be carried up the stairs. Cooper still loves to climb the stairs. Bryce is variable, sometimes she climbs the stairs on her own other times she asks to be carried, but when she climbs she now likes to look around which adds to a parent's excitement). One more thing about the stairs which is beautiful and deserves some expounding. Our stairs have a 180 degree turn about 2/3 the way up. So that when you are on the second tier you can look down through the metal bars to see the stairs/ people lower than you. This access is ideal for stealing kisses from the girls. They love to bend down from the top level to kiss you through the bars when you are on the way up. It makes our hearts melt. Bryce gives open mouth kisses and Darcy closed mouth kisses both with a smile. The kid's new fetish is chairs. A few months back when they first started to crawl into and sit up in their padded Pottery Barn embroidered chairs it was cute, (and semi-safe 4 inches off the ground). They would grab a book or two and bring it to their chair, and surprisingly usually their own chair, and sit and leaf through the pages, occasionally "reading" aloud. The girls have now mastered their technique of climbing on our dinner chairs, (much higher off the ground). They sit on the chair all proud and look around for approval/disapproval. The art of coming down has not yet been perfected. This is just one of the many reasons why overall it seems like we are constantly playing defense trying to avert a major injury. (I took all three kids to the park myself and though we had a good time and no accidents, it was not easy. Mid way through my friend Steve came by with his son and helped out with the zone defense).
The kids are great and I wish I could capture all the new nuances and the changes which are happening everyday. Bryce now likes to take her clothes and diaper off in the crib during nap time, (and generally the diaper has been full). Cooper has developed an independence in that he is happy playing alone. Darcy nods with her head and torso. They all understand very complex commands which I find amazing. They all cry real tears instantly when they do not get their way. Bryce has been choosing the clothes she wears each morning, ( I am not sure how this happened, she is only 19 months old, but she loves to flick through the clothes on hangers, as if she was in a store). Darcy had a streak where before bed she always brought the same book to us to read to her, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".
Audrey and I are going on vacation, and we think this may be our last vacation for the two of us alone for many years to come. Audrey's parents are visiting from Florida, and will watch the kids in tandem with Anabell and Ester while we are away. This is our second trip alone since the kids were born. The first trip was also a cruise. The first was a celebration of 10 years of marriage and we had a great time in Alaska. We planned this latter trip only a few weeks ago as my in-laws were going to be in town and our lives will only be getting busier with time. So while I am looking forward to the trip I am afraid to leave the kids. I know there is more and more "danger" as they get bigger, faster and more curious. I hope I am able to relax on this Western Caribbean cruise.
This post is all over the place. I need to tidy it up.

Walking
Well, we have waited a long time we can now say all our children can take multiple steps - so they are walking. It was not as I imagined it would be, though in retrospect it makes sense. As the days pass the percentage of time the kids spend walking vs crawling increases. So it is not a all or nothing process. They all crawl faster than they walk so when the feel the need for speed, they crawl. Darcy was the first to do so and she is gaining sturdiness but as I call it she still walks like Frankenstein. Cooper and his slim legs are up and about a lot. He is great pushing the "Little Tikes" stroller apparatus. He pretty much has his whole body at an angle running forward. Bryce is the last of our children to walk. It seems this may be related to her ultra flexible joints. She has her legs going in all directions. Bryce still like to be the joker and loves attention. When we encourage Cooper or Darcy for their excellent walking she can be at the other end of the room, and when she recognizes the praise. She will then stand up, all quads like a power lifter, smile and give herself claps while nodding at you and almost wink.
The kids are talking a lot more. They like to repeat words that are said. Cooper loves balls and his favorite word is "ball" after of course "dada". Cooper also says, "yeah" in squeaky high voice when he gets excited. Darcy loves saying "baby". Bryce does not yet have a favorite word I have identified. She likes making animal noises, life "woof wooof" for a dog and " eekekk" for a monkey.
Our kids have quirks. Cooper loves plants. He fights hard to get to the soil at the base of the plants we have cordoned off,(so that he can't get to them and like a crane remove piles of dirt on to the floor). Cooper loves his stuffed cows, and loves sucking on the ears. I call it Cooper's cow "crack" - he is super addicted. The blue cow's head is discolored from the amount of drool Cooper produces while sucking. Despite washing the cow over and over it does not come completely clean and does not slow down Cooper's love for the ears. Cooper loves Cheerios and cheese. When given a variety of small foods, Cooper carefully selects out the small round "o" Cheerios before eating anything else.

Anabell
Our Nanny Anabell is very special.
We are very luck to have found someone so special to take care of our triplets. And everyday she surprises us with another talent we did not know had.
Anabell had worked with four sets of triplets before she came to work with us. It just happened that as we were looking for a Nanny her employer had told her her services were no longer going to be needed as the kids started school. (Initially they said they would still require her services - so lucky for us they reneged on their promise). Anabel had interviewed with other families, but chose our family as she thought we were the "most desperate". She qualified this to mean we had no support network - our families are back in Canada. So she felt secure in knowing that her job was secure. She also later admitted that she usually asks for a contract to be signed to secure her future employment, but did not ask for this contract.
Anabell is American, through marriage, and is a proud Mexican from Monterrey. She is bilingual, with some unique English word modifications that are Anabellisms. Neighbor=Neighborhood; Generic=Genetic; Crill=Crib; Runaway=Right a way; Gum=Gun; Ham=Kosher turkey; he/she are interchangeable; (in fact when she refereed to a girl as a he, and caught herself, she consoled herself by saying, "it's okay he/she is a lesbian").
Anabell's great qualities are many and foremost in those great traits is that she loves our kids. It is obvious in the way she takes care of them and like us hangs on all the doctor has to say at well and sick kid visits. She takes what the doctor says personally like when we are told the kids need to eat more. The love she demonstrates is hard to evaluate for in an interview and we are very lucky she treats this much more important than a job. Anabell's memory and her powers of observation are very astute. She remembers everything we tell her and she remembers medical conditions she has seen before and recalls the therapy that was previously successful. Another great trait is Anabell's caution.
Anabell is much more than our Nanny, even though that is why we hired her. She is basically the chief of operations of our home. She recommended we change our electric company and this resulted in hundreds of dollars saved per month. She had her husband, Stacy, come over to install baby-proofing items for safety of the kids. He also installed a new microwave and changed electrical outlets as well as provided plumbing advice. She organizes our babysitters for nights and weekends when we go out. They call Anabell and she tells them which days they can work. Anabell also recommended her mother to be the Nanny of our friends child and they hired her.
Unexpected benefits that come with Anabell include her delicious cooking. At first she was worried about the intricacies of Kosher cooking but that is a thing of the past. This past weekend though it was not a traditional Rosh Hashanah meal we had a fantastic meal prepared by Anabell. She also makes our bed, which Audrey loves, and does our laundry. This is all in addition to taking fantastic care of our triplets. We call her super-nanny to our close friends, but I do not want word to get out to far lest someone tries to steal her away.
She loves her family, her parents, her husband Stacy and her kids Michael and Alexis. She is very proud of the kids she has raised. Anabell loves to talk. We think she must talk a lot on the phone, and we think because of this our kids think all items about 3 inches long are phones. And because of Anabell our kids will be bilingual.

How do you set a default font on this program?!!? I must be getting older, I chose a "larger" font.
The kids, our triplets, are doing great. now 15 months old.
We are all standing and Darcy and Cooper have taken a few steps. Bryce likes to attract attention for her standing but her legs are all over the place when we walk with her, (pretty hilarious). I am feeling saddened by the not so sudden evolution to walking but shocked that the crawling stage is almost over. I mean as soon as the walking starts in earnest the crawling will be over and crawling is so adorable. Our kids have really picked up a lot of speed with their crawling - Bryce's strategy - head down (to decrease wind resistance) and straight ahead.
We are now 15 months and our children are changing quickly. There is new competition between them for toys and for attention from us. Darcy was the first to exhibit these tendencies. Darcy likes to squeeze in beside Audrey irrespective of anyone or thing that is in the spot she wants to occupy. Darcy also likes sitting on chairs, and when a new toy desk was brought into the play room and Bryce happened to be in the seat, Darcy backed her way into Bryce's lap to gain access to the seat. Darcy studies people's movements and acts methodically. She clearly says, "baby", one of her first words. Darcy has beautiful wavy curly hair and loves when people "do" her hair and likes to wear a beret.
We are convinced Bryce received extra copies of the "funny" genes. Everything she does is uniquely Bryce and is super funny. Audrey even mentions that the fact she only has two upper teeth and two lower teeth is funny and cute. She likes to mimic our actions, but when she does them she makes them funny. Bryce plays Peek-a-boo her own style. She covers one eye and makes sure she can see you with the other. Bryce blows kisses sometimes hitting herself in the forehead in the process. Bryce loves looking for things under the bed, commando style. Bryce is extremely coordinated and is very gentle.
Cooper - our son - is the tallest but weighs the least, a pound less than his nearly 20 pound sisters, yet his grip is surprisingly strong. Cooper loves balls and loves to play chase. He has an infectious laugh. Cooper has become a finicky eater, at least at dinner. He loves cheese - our fall back food. Cooper still adores stuffed animals particularly his stuffed blue cow. He has also adopted Bryce's yellow cow. For some reason he is soothed by sucking on the cow's ears. Cooper mimics the sound of a car engine when he plays with a car.

One year plus
Our triplets are now 14 months old and they get funner and funnier all the time. We just came back from our first trip to Canada. Though our kids are American they automatically are Canadian citizens. And this trip was to meet the family. The flights down were during the day, and were shockingly smooth. The flights back, scheduled at night on purpose to allow some sleep were more difficult. Little sleep and much yelling - more yelling than we have heard from the trio yet. Sarah our friend and neighbor came with to help out. All of our kids have their own set of sleep "friends" and each has their favorite. Bryce loves a one foot square blanket that is shiny on one side. Darcy has a blanket that is attached to a stuffed doggy. Sometimes Darcy reaches into Bryce's crib to try out her blanket and gets upset when we give it back to Bryce. Cooper has a blue stuffed cow. He loves his cow very much. Each night when he goes to bed he mashes his face into the cow and hugs the cow closely to his face. Cooper also sucks on the cow's ears and head to the point it is now discolored despite being washed multiple times. The cow is also stinky.
Cooper. Cooper loves to laugh. He has a great smile, and now has some teeth. Cooper likes to play chase. He likes to be chased more specifically. He waits for you to come close and then tries to speed away. He puts his head down and crawls frantically in the opposite direction. It is quite cute. (All our kids are cruising but no walking yet). Cooper for a long time was different than his sisters in that he never put anything into his mouth. That has changed and he now feeds himself. He loves bread and I call him the chipmunk. He shoves bread into his mouth but does not swallow, filling his cheeks with bread. Soon after it comes out the same hole it went in. He also loves Cheerios. Cooper loves to clap. As soon as he hears the beginning to the song, "if you are happy and you know it" he is applauding wildly.
Darcy. Darcy is now bigger than Cooper in weight and may have caught up to Bryce. She is a good eater. Darcy has hit a bunch of milestones earlier than BC, she clapped really early and stood up really early. Today as I was describing facial anatomy and mentioned and demonstrated the tongue, her little tongue was jutting back and forth from her mouth. Darcy is our most sensitive child. She does not like to be reprimanded. Any sentence with "no" and "Darcy" in it brings tears to her eyes. Bryce and Cooper are still oblivious. Darcy is already into the "by self" phase. I really have no idea when that should begin but it seems early. She has to feed herself, and refuses to be fed. Darcy has an incredible high pitched yell when she feels pure joy and excitement. Darcy loves cheese.
Bryce. Bryce is really really funny. She makes funny faces. She is always trying to mimic everything she sees, (even people with facial ticks). She wakes up happy even though she is groggy. Bryce still likes massages. I am fearful Bryce's money will go to get massages for the rest of her life. She loves rubs on her arms and back. She still freezes in position when she gets an arm massage and her eyes glass over as she stares into the distance. More recently she has learned to lie down on her stomach, which she does only because it is associated with a back rub. She also puts her little hands behind her back to show you where she wants her rubs. Bryce loves to play with her new squeaky toy Sophie the rubber giraffe from France.

Sleep until 10 months

The uniqueness of sleep patterns in our kids is truly amazing.
From the beginning our kids have been great sleepers and I mean GREAT. It is rare for all three NOT to sleep through the night. Audrey and I know this is extremely lucky. During our pregnancy with the triplets we bought the recommended text on sleep by Richard Ferber, and so far have not referred to it once. (Hopefully, saying this aloud does not now curse our sleep fortune).
Based on a few recommendations and books, that the kids like having their siblings around when sleeping, from when we came home from the hospital, we put all three kids in one crib. The kids were lined up perpendicular to the long axis of the bed, 3 across, on their backs and swaddled. Initially, an occasional arm would come free but most of the time they were exactly as we left them when we came back for the next feeding, (about 2 hour later).
At 6 months they moved more and they started to flip over in bed. That's when we had to stop swaddling. At the time our daughter Bryce was bigger and more coordinated than her siblings. Bigger is a relative term, she was about a pound bigger than Darcy and half a pound bigger than Cooper. Does not sound like a lot but when you are 13 pounds it is a lot on a relative scale. I was fearful our Goliath (Bryce) was too much for Darcy and Cooper to handle so Bryce was separated from her siblings and moved to her own crib for naps and sleep. It was actually a hard decision to make. There is irony in Bryce being separated from her siblings but more on that later. Immediately, after the swaddle was removed for sleep, our kids always flipped over and slept on their stomachs despite being put in their crib ,"Back to sleep". Their sleep positions were mostly always bums up in the air. Bryce was cute in that sometimes she would tuck her hands under her stomach to keep them warmer.
It is hard to describe the limited amount of interaction or feedback you get from your kids at this age, and now looking back it is hard to remember as the feedback and interactions increase as they age, but at the time there was little from their side and a lots of love from us. It is with this that I write that Darcy made it clear to us that she loves sleeping with Cooper. We would put them in the crib to sleep and when we came back, Darcy had found a way to scoot over to sleep next to her brother. It is a beautiful thing- her head resting on his shoulder, or them spooning together.
Now that they are 10 months their sleep patterns are unique. Cooper our son is generally the first to fall asleep. From about 8 months he had trouble with his before bedtime bottle, as it was a fight between eating and sleeping. Usually, sleep won and he was fast asleep as soon as his body hits the mattress. His sleep position is best described as the body that gets a chalk outline at a crime scene - on his stomach, one leg bent at the hip and knee, the other straight, one arm up over his head the other down by his side. Cooper wakes up ready to eat and lets you know right away.
At 10 months Bryce still loves sleeping in the balled up bums up position. She like Cooper falls asleep soon after hitting the mattress. The irony of moving Bryce into her own crib first is that once she falls asleep she does not move. We cover Bryce with a blanket, that is only slightly wider than her body and that blanket is still on her in the same position 11 hours later.
Darcy is very funny. Darcy tells us when it is time for a nap or time to go to sleep. When it is time she takes her thumb and puts it into her mouth, mostly her left thumb, sometimes the right thumb and sometimes, both thumbs. Darcy's has created her own bedtime routine. She does not go to sleep immediately. Darcy chooses to practice all that she has learned at bedtime. We leave the room and Darcy then practices. Darcy practices talking, tongue clicking, clapping, or whatever she learned that day. We would peek back in the room and though it is dark except for the night light Darcy is on all fours rocking back and forth, getting herself ready for the next stage of crawling. After her routine, about 25 minutes, she puts herself to sleep. She mostly sleeps on her side bent at the hip, in the shape of an"L".

So much to write and so little time
Our triplets are doing great.
Darcy: Darcy started out as out smallest child 2 pounds 14 ounces at birth down to 2 lbs 7 ounces before she began to get the hang of eating. She is now our best eater. She is focused and our most coordinated eater. She is really cute when she holds her 8 ounces of milk as the bottle looks too big for her little hands. Then she show off by swinging the bottle around with one hand. Darcy gives great hugs and mashes her head into your when you come to give her a kiss, always with an excited smile. Darcy was our first to crawl and is our most independent and adventurous child. unlike Bryce who likes making sure you are watching Darcy is fine doing around cheeking things out on her own. She is also now our first child to pull up. She loves being tickled.
Bryce: Bryce is funny funny funny. She tries to make people laugh. She is always checking out people's reaction to her antics. They really are antics as she does things just to get responses. She has a "fake" laugh, where she yells "AHHHHH". Bryce recently had her first bottom tooth come through (10 months), the last of our children to get their first teeth. Bryce crawls really fast and is always on the move whenever she she some thing that catches her eye. She caused us to remove a plant from the floor where it was living for 6 years. Bryce one day decided the leaves were low lying fruit ready to be picked and constantly went back to the plant for more...Bryce is also a big fan of her bibs and anyone else's bib. Bibs are the best toy in the house. She prefers her bib to food. She is adept at taking off her bib as well as that of her brother and sister. Bryce is also funny in that she becomes semi paralyze when she receives soft touches. She freezes in whatever position she is in as if to fully enjoy the sensation.
Cooper: Cooper is a sweetie. People are enamoured with his long thick eyelashes, mostly the envious women. Cooper is now rocking back and forth on his knees, trying to keep up with his mobile sisters. Cooper loves smashing toys against the floor and loves watching a ball twist its way down the spiral. Cooper is a tough eater - he shuts his mouth when he is done eating and is hard to get him to change his mind once he feels he has had enough. Cooper is unique in that he never puts any toys in his mouth.
All our kids love when books are read to them. their eyes fixate and the room becomes silent. They also love when they hear live singing especially Twinkle Twinkle and the ABC's the two songs Audrey and I know.

2009 01 12
Not sure of the format I want to keep for this blog , so I am trying anything until I settle on something I like.
Kids:
We have three kids - triplets born on May 12th, 2008. Our two daughters, Bryce and Darcy and our son Cooper. Today is their 8 month birthday. We have taken photos in their personalized chairs every month. Maybe I will figure out how to post these in this blog.
Our kids had their first colds ever and the cold has lasted longer than I want. My fear with this illness is that it progresses from an upper respiratory tract infection to a lower respiratory tract infection. But that is just my craziness - I am pretty crazy. On the positive side, they are generally remarkably in good spirits for being sick for about 10 days. All still smiling and laughing.
We are really lucky and all our kids are incredible.
Our daughter Darcy (Snow Angel), the smallest of the three, has the most unbelievable disposition. She waits calmly in bed and smiles when you arrive. My wife, Audrey, says, "Darcy has not figured out that she can yell to get us to come and see her". I think she is content to do what she wants. She loves being tucked into her car seat, and just saying the word "tuck" makes her smile. She scrunches her nose, gives us an open mouth smile, and shrieks when we do "superbaby" - basically rocking her on her back side to side on an outstretched arm.
Our daughter Bryce (Grabby Hands) is also special. Bryce loves making people smile and laugh. She has developed a laugh which is so beautiful and is so happy to share with everyone around her. Her smile is contagious and makes everyone she meet smile back and comment. She really is a funny girl. She has great hand eye coordination. Bryce is able to focus and concentrate on tasks. I know this sounds odd when talking about an 8 month old but she is really focused when she is playing. She also blinks slllooowllyyy giving an inpression that she understands what you are saying.
Our son Cooper (Lil'man). Cooper is also funny and sweet. Cooper began responding to "Hi", with his own version of "Hi" at about 6 months. It is now a game for Cooper to say "hi" after he hears it, and this can go back and forth for a long time. Cooper is the most snugly of our three children. Cooper was born with the longest eyelashes and he continues to grow these lashes that have all the women jealous.
Hopefully will be able to add photos later in the day.
